APRIL 2008 TIPS

Late dormant pruning (except oaks) can still be done – just choose your day carefully. A nice, dry, and sunny day will help the tissue close off quickly, resulting in minimal exposure to pathogens and insect pests.

Cultural controls are a good way to minimize chemical use for ornamentals in the landscape. Start early in the season to remove weeds from the beds. Eliminating them early, before they go to seed, will help break the reproduction cycle.

Using a reasonable depth of sustainable production mulch or compost will moderate weed pressures and retain soil moisture without leaving negative environmental impacts.

Take your mower in for servicing. A tuned mower will burn cleaner – sending less exhaust into the air. Sharp mower blades will reduce the potential for damage and disease to turf.

A healthy lawn is the best defense against weeds. Set your mower blade height to 3.5 inches. This minor adjustment will increase understory shading, decreasing weed seed germination and the need for weed control.

Leave the clippings on the lawn – it will reduce the overall need for nitrogen applications throughout the season.

If you choose to apply pre-emergent weed products, monitor the soil temperature for maximum benefit. Germination activity begins when soil temperatures reach 50 degrees F. four inches below the soil surface.
